Research into Music Genres: Alternative

Definition of Alternative Music:

1) Alternative rock (also called alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music that emerged in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s.

Alternative Music

Alternative (Rock) is a type of rock music genre which emerged from the independent music underground of 1980s, but became widely popular by the 1990s-2000s. The genre is seen to be descended from Punk Rock, for example New Wave. Instruments found in Alternative music are electric guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.

Pros and Cons of Alternative:
Pros:
· Lyrics mean more and relate to everyday situations.
· Upbeat due to the use of different instruments (e.g. keyboard, electric guitar).
· Original piece of music.
Cons:
· Alternative music may be classed as similar to Pop music.
