First Appearance: Formation and First Years (1996-99)
When Coldplay (was known as Starfish before changing their name to Coldplay) formed in September 1996, their look was scruffy jeans and a top.
Change 2: Parachutes (1999-2001)
After there first album sold over five thousand copies they changed their look again, this time with a smart/causal boy band look but still trying to portray their own individual styles as a 'British rock band'. The look took place in 2000 after releasing there debut album, Parachutes.
Change 3: A Rush of Blood to the Head (2001-04)
After the success of Parachutes, Coldplay returned to the studio in September 2001 to begin work on their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head. In the June of 2004 Coldplay performed at Glastonbury Music Festival, again their style hadn't made a dramatic change, expect the more 'British rock band' was opening up to audiences.
Change 4: X&Y (2004-2006):
Coldplay spent most of 2004 out of the spotlight, taking a break from touring and releasing a satire music video of a song from a fictional band titled The Nappies while recording their third album. However their image changed again when there singles Fix You and Talk where released, giving themselves more of an edgy rock look for the band.
Change 5: Viva la Vida and All His Friends (2006-2009)
In October 2006 Coldplay began work on their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida and All His Friends. The album was a change from their past three albums, which they have referred to as a "trilogy". He said the album featured less falsetto as he allowed his voice's lower register to take precedence. Some songs, such as "Violent Hill", contain distorted guitar riffs and bluesy undertones. The band took another image change, this time taking on the look of the French Revulsion with military jackets connecting with the album cover. The look was designed by Stella McCartney, Chris Martins military jacket is in the V&A Gallery.

Change 6: Mylo Xyloto (2009-present)
The band finished recording the new album in mid-2011. On 31 May 2011, Coldplay announced that "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" was to be the first single for the fifth album. It was released on 3 June 2011. For the sixth time the band changed their appearance on a whole new level. Coldplay took the inspiration for their new album. Lyrically, the album is inspired by "old school American graffiti" and "the White Rose Movement". Chris Martin also said that the album was influenced by HBO TV series The Wire.
Having seen Coldplay live this June at their recent tour, I can say that the "old school American Graffiti" inspiration worked thoroughly well. Below are some images from the tour:
