Research and Planning: Rough Shot List Guide

After looking back at footage so far, and having outside observers watch some of our footage; we realised that our opening footage had dull lighting, and the overall filming was fuzzy. Furthermore, we hadn't filmed any performance elements of our artisit singing.

We decided to think of other possiblities for the opening, that included performance elements. Below is the rough draft of our Shot List for the opening of our music video:

Research and Planning for Ancillary: Album Designs Cut 1

Below are the photographs for our album so far. We have created the album artwork in a style that meets both our audience and bands demand. Thus, we have created an album cover that is simple yet affective, and illustrates both the beauty in nature, and the beauty in life itself. This idea compliments the music video following the representation of moving from a dark place of depression, to where they are guided into a light from their depression.

Research and Planning for Ancillary: Font Research

Looking at our five experimental album cover images, we narrowed the choice down to 'Zapfino'. We felt that the font captured the essence of the photograph well, representing our artist as pure and innocent, 'angel' like, which is one of the ideas we had for our artist. I decided to research into the 'Zapfino' font into more detail.

Zapfino Font:

Zapfino is a calligraphic typeface designed by Hermann Zapf in 1998. The inspiration is based on an alphabet 'Zapf' originally penned in 1994.

As part of our Album Cover research, we wanted to experiment with different types of fonts, adjusting them to fit in with our covers. 

As our front cover of the album is of Amy Barton herself, she has been represented as the 'pure one', who helps our other actress, Jenny, come out of her depression. To link with Amy being 'pure' and the connotations of her outfit (whites and cream colours), we wanted to find fonts that balanced well with our photograph.

We experimented with 5 different fonts for the front cover, and compared them together to narrow down the options of the font. Below are our experiments with the different fonts;

Research and Planning for Anciullary: Genre of Album Artwork

Amy's Ghost genre is categorised in the Alternative section, due to inspirations from bands such as Elbow, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kings of Leon and Radiohead. As part of my album artwork research before design Amy's Ghost posters and gig posters, I decided to research into alternative band posters and analyse them, getting into the creative process for designing my bands artwork.

Research and Planning for Ancillary: Amy's Ghost Art Work Process

After calibrating with the band and filming with them for our music video, we asked Amy Barton, the lead singer of Amy's Ghost, the process of their album artwork. As the discussion began we found out her creative process and ideas in order to create her vision of the album artwork.

Amy explained that the process begins after taking and finding the certain look for the front cover of their album. After selecting the final image for the album cover, she starts drawing and sketching patterns/designs on paper until she finds the inspiration for the cover. Once she decides on the correct sketches and patterns, she draws them onto the image and the album cover is complete. Below is the image of the album work of the single Lullaby, showing Amy's creativity on the artwork.

Lady Hawake

Famous female lead singer, Lady Hawake, had the similar ideas like Amy's Ghost for her album concept. I chose Lady Hawake as her album work is very similar to Amy Ghost's album designs and concept. Compared to how Amy uses a still photograph, which then is drawn on with patterns, Lady Hawake's consist of watercolors of a photographed image, creating new identify for album artwork. Not only does she use watercolors but also a stencil pencil design, but selecting one colour to reflect on a certain feature of herself. Below we can see that for the stencil pencil design, she has chosen a blue to show her eyes, drawing consumers in.
